Georgia Simmerling: the definition of a physically literate athlete

Georgia Simmerling is not your average Canadian Olympian. After pedalling a velodrome (a cycle-racing track, typically with steeply banked curves) for the first time a little over a year ago, she has a shot at making Canada’s track cycling team for this summer’s Olympic games in Rio — which is pretty good for a skier.

That’s right. Simmerling has been to the Olympics before, twice, for alpine skiing and ski cross. If she cracks the roster this summer, that would make her a three-time Olympian, for three different sports.

Simmerling admits that she has a lot to learn about her new sport, but her willingness and determination to make the Canadian Olympic team is undeniable. For someone who moves so well and combines so many skills, it’s hard to categorize Georgia Simmerling as one thing. Skier. Cyclist. Physically literate athlete.
