Summer challenge: Limiting screen time in favour of the sun
Editor’s note: This article was updated on July 10, 2019.
There are many factors influencing Canadian children’s daily activity levels, but increased screen time is a growing concern.
With the official start of summer upon us, parents should consider limiting daily screen time. Sure, you may think your child isn’t over-exposed, but between the television, computer, and various iThings, the time adds up.
Set boundaries and encourage outdoor play. With the weather warming up, kids will have no excuse to stay inside and they’ll be one step closer to being active for life.
In this article for Wired, Jenny Williams writes about “the summer my kids (almost) completely unplugged.”
My hopes for this experiment are manifold. I want my son to be more physically active. I want my son to experience boredom. I want my son to play with his other toys. Whenever he does, he has a great time and often produces very creative results.
