Frisbee basics

Frisbee Basics

Requirements

  • One frisbee.
  • Large outdoor grass field without tripping hazards, fences, or trees.

Instructions

  1. With your throwing hand, hold the frisbee with your thumb on top, your index finger along the outside rim, and your remaining three fingers hooked under the rim.
  2. If you are throwing righthanded, stand with your right foot in front and your left foot one full step behind. If you are throwing lefthanded, stand with your left foot in front.
  3. Rotate your trunk and shoulders backwards from your waist, so you are holding the frisbee behind you, then rotate forward quickly from your waist and throw the frisbee in one smooth motion.
  4. Be sure to put some spin on the frisbee by flicking your wrist as you release it—the spin is what makes the frisbee fly.
  5. To practice throwing for the first time, you can either throw to another person who is standing 5-10 metres away, or you can set up a target—such as a large cardboard box on its side—and try to throw the frisbee into it.

Variations

  • Once your child has mastered the basic throw, try to invent some trick throws.
  • For example, can you lift your front leg and throw your frisbee under it?

Benefits

This activity develops an unusual style of throwing that requires both large-motor and fine-motor coordination of the hands, wrists, arms, legs, and trunk.
