A mom and her son and daughter dress the father up like a mummy for Halloween. The daughter holds a roll of paper towel and is laughing.

A fun, kid-friendly Halloween playlist to get the whole family moving

Set the mood for a fun spooky season and get your bodies moving together with these iconic, spook-tacular songs.

Werewolves of London – Warren Zevon

It’s catchy, it’s weird, and you’ll definitely start dancing around the living room howling in your costume. It’s such a fun one for both kids and adults and should always be on your spooky-season playlist, whether you’re having a Halloween party or just hanging out with family.

People Are Strange – The Doors

Whether it reminds you of the ‘80s horror film The Lost Boys (the movie opens to a cover of this song by Echo and the Bunnymen) or it just makes you think of your favourite psychedelic rock band, this song is a good reminder that Halloween is the perfect time to express your strange self. Showcasing your weirdest dance moves around the house is not only acceptable, but encouraged.

Hungry Like the Wolf – Duran Duran

Nothing says ‘80s Halloween vibes quite like Duran Duran—and luckily for the purposes of this playlist, it was an era of big-energy dancing (not to mention big hair). Have your little kids do their best wolf impression, or take a turn being the wolf and chase them around the room. They will love it!

Ghostbusters – Ray Parker Jr.

Parents will love this nostalgic throwback to their own childhood Halloweens, and the infectious nature of our enthusiasm is all but guaranteed to get our kids up and dancing too (and our older kids rolling their eyes while reluctantly joining in).

I Want Candy – Bow Wow Wow

Getting pumped up for trick-or-treating? Kiddos will be singing along to this catchy tune in no time while getting into character with a pep in their step. (Just in case they needed any more motivation to fill their bag with treats.)

Monster Mash – Bobby Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers

What exactly is the monster mash? It’s open for interpretation. You and your kids can take turns showing off your own version of the best “monster mash” dance. Winner gets to make everyone in the family do the dance too!

Bad Moon Rising – Creedence Clearwater Revival

It’s impossible to hear the opening notes of this song and not want to immediately get up and groove. And though you might not technically classify it as a Halloween song, it definitely has a special spot on every Halloween playlist thanks to the lyrics, the beat, and the upbeat-yet-foreboding atmosphere it creates.

Dancing in the Dark – Bruce Springsteen

Is this the best Halloween song that’s not actually a Halloween song? We think so. It certainly helps that it channels those particular All Hallows’ Eve vibes by combining a dark night with enthusiastic dancing (which is what we’re all here for).

Double Trouble – John Williams (Harry Potter soundtrack)

There’s something magically witchy about this classic Harry Potter song and if you think it’s not the type of song you dance to, think again. My eight-year-old niece had no problem making up an entire dance routine in which she pretends to be stirring a cauldron, lighting a fire, and acting like the “something wicked” the song refers to. Channel that witchy energy (or the enthusiasm of your eight-year-old) and make up your own magical dance routine.
