Canadian star diver Alexandre Despatie retires

Alexandre Despatie, one of Canada’s best divers, has announced his retirement.

In a press conference in Montreal today, Alexandre thanked his supporters. “Thank you for believing in me,” he said. “To all my friends, thank you for your understanding. To my family. mom, dad, thank you for your unconditional support.”

The three-time world champion became a star at the age of 13 when he won gold in the 10-metre event at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. In the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games he won silver on the three-metre springboard.

CBC’s The National ran a feature story on Alexandre in the lead up to the London Olympic Games.

Congratulations, Alexandre, on a great career. And thanks for being such a positive role model for active Canadians.

Despite retiring from competitive diving, we expect Alexandre will remain active for life.
